“The Sooner Series” takes its inspiration from Jon’s formative years, spanning the 7th to 11th grades in school. It was during this transformative period that Jon discovered his identity as a young, black man navigating the complexities of life in the lower middle class. These years, a crucible of self-discovery, have provided the fertile ground from which this remarkable series has sprung.

At its core, “The Sooner Series” conveys the profound notion that, in life, there comes a moment when we must act decisively to accomplish what holds true importance to us. Drawing a poetic parallel with Jon’s roots, we find a profound connection to his birthplace, Oklahoma, known as the “Sooner State.” In 1889, this land was witness to a historic event where individuals surged into central Oklahoma to claim their stake in nearly 2 million acres, opened for settlement by the U.S. government.

What makes this connection truly intriguing is the term “sooners” – a moniker given to those daring souls who ventured into the region before the official land run’s designated starting time, at noon on April 22, 1889. They were the ones who moved ahead of schedule, seizing opportunities with unwavering determination.

In much the same way, Jon’s “The Sooner Series” invites us to contemplate the significance of acting promptly, of taking charge of our destinies, and embracing the important aspects of our lives before they slip away. Through his artistry, he encapsulates the spirit of those who dared to be “sooners” in the land of opportunity, mirroring the tenacity and courage required to claim one’s place in the world.
