BIOGRAPHY

Jon Gilchrist is a self-taught abstract artist born in 1975 in Oklahoma City, OK. Jon’s upbringing was enhanced by his involvement in various forms of artistic expression. Later, Jon was exposed to, and inspired by, the following artists: as Joan Mitchell, Sam Gilliam, Mark Rothko, Sam Francis, Robert Motherwell, Norman Lewis, and Romare Bearden. Jon expresses these influences through his use of texture, materials, arrangement, application, and elevating his own brand of social commentary to a more universal stature.

STATEMENT

I paint to share my soul with the universe, and beyond – hoping it initiates greater observation of the things. I paint because I have melodies inside of me – jazz riffs and tempos that are screaming to get out and explore. I paint because it connected me to my late Mother.
