Negative Spaces – RED DOT MIAMI 2023

Set against the dynamic backdrop of Miami, GALERIA AZUR makes its debut at RED DOT Art Fair with a collective proposal that challenges expectations and pushes the boundaries of contemporary artistic perception. “Negative Spaces” is a profound journey into the invisible, the absent, and the unseen, where negative space comes to life, unearths its mysteries, showcases its power, and resonates within the human psyche.

In traditional art, negative space, i.e., the area surrounding and separating the main forms, is perceived as a background, a blank canvas giving way to dominant figures. In “Negative Spaces,” it takes center stage. It becomes the main character. Here, this seemingly vacant space is elevated to a place of prominence and reflection.

Artists delve into the notion of what cannot be seen with the naked eye, exploring the invisible, whether in the physical sense or in more abstract terms. These creators question the significance of what we cannot see, unraveling what lies behind appearances and hides in the shadows. The proposal invites viewers to contemplate the interaction between absence and presence. What is missing in a work of art becomes as essential as what is present. The relationship between these two opposing forces creates a captivating dynamic that challenges our perception and understanding of the world around us.

Within these concepts, the exhibition presents a diverse range of works by contemporary artists who have embraced the notion of negative space: from paintings that explore the ambiguity of the unseen, sculptures and small objects that invite an exploration of the absent, to delicate drawings that traverse the boundary between reality and imagination, leading us to a realm where the visible and the invisible intertwine.

“Negative Spaces” is a celebration of what often goes unnoticed. It serves as a reminder that, frequently, in the negative spaces of life and art, we discover the greatest depth and meaning. This seemingly empty space is full of possibilities and is where true magic unfolds. As we explore this exhibition, we reflect on the power of negative space and how it can resonate in our everyday lives. In this realm of the invisible, these artists find the beauty and poetry that lie within the unseen.
