Intriguingly, we embark on a journey from abstraction to figuration, guided by the echoes of a minotaur, gods, a sword,
and a thread that promises escape from the labyrinthine depths. The myth of Theseus and the thread of Ariadne, one of
the most renowned tales from Greek mythology, whispers to us about how love provides a pathway to conquer our inner
demons and navigate the convoluted mazes of existence. Yet, as is often the case in Greek myths, it also alludes to the tragic
undercurrent of life. Numerous luminaries, including William Shakespeare and Jorge Luis Borges, drew inspiration from this
narrative and its characters for their own creative works.Ariadne emerges as the linchpin for the vanquishing of the ravenous
beast and the escape from the labyrinth. Out of love for the hero Theseus, she bequeaths not only the instrument
of combat, the sword, but also the path to freedom: to follow the thread woven by feminine hands.
In a mythological synthesis and a dazzling flourish, John Bacon endeavors to distort and fragment the figurative
elements within his oeuvre. Oscillating between abstraction and figuration, and playing with the interplay of figures and
background, Bacon revisits the tenets of cubism and flirts with the sinuous, zigzagging motifs of Art Deco. Much like
Ariadne’s thread, the artist navigates “through a pictorial thread” to breathe life into his compositions, effortlessly
traversing the labyrinth of abstraction, with the stroke serving as the primary protagonist.
Departing from the confines of cubism, his work distinguishes itself through the simplicity of gesture and a restrained
palette. Simultaneously portraying figures from multiple angles with anarchic exuberance, Bacon’s oeuvre challenges naturalism
and renders the question of the abstract irrelevant. This collection of works, presented for the first time in a solo
exhibition at Galeria Azur NY, delves into an inner state that defies rigid interpretation. Bacon paints a pictorial
representation of an indefinable mental state, permitting the imagination to give shape to forms that reflect the profound
and primal roots of the human psyche. These drawings, embodying a figurative synthesis within themselves, offer a
glimpse into the artist’s transformative journey, exploring the contrast between the canvas and the lines laden with
allegorical weight. In a world inundated with anxieties and contemplations, this metaphorical artwork, marked by its precise lines and
inquisitive spirit, unfolds as an intrepid explorer of the labyrinthine recesses of thought and unfettered imagination.
