With references to the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and Ariadne, John Bacon’s work distorts and fragments the figurative elements in a way that is simultaneously cubist and art deco. Like Ariadne’s thread, Bacon’s use of the line creates a pictorial journey through a labyrinth of abstraction and figuration, resulting in compositions that are at once playful and profound.
