BIOGRAPHY

Matouš Tichý was born on August 19, 1989 in Prague. His family’s painting background may have contributed to his artistic expression with an interest in large formats and rather monumental asthetic of space.
Nevertheless, his childhood spent in the countryside certainly influenced him in his tendency to lyricise subject matters.
In 2010, he was admitted to the AVU Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Professor Kokolia. As his works differed from the painting expression of the Academy professor, he decided to leave the school three years later.
Tichý’s work is also a reflection of his multiple trips abroad, where he worked as a model whilst always painting; particularly ten months spent in Japan significantly influenced his work. In 2014, he had his own studio in Calle de Cuevas, Madrid, Spain for half a year. He ended his four months in Bangkok in 2018 with the exhibition “The Echoes of Falling Shadows”. He currently lives in Prague and makes his living as a painter and model.

STATEMENT

Matouš Tichý is an expressive romantic realist painter. Influenced by the rural environment in which he grew up, his work reflects the close relationship between humans and nature. His pictorial compositions benefit from cultural and natural artifacts, which is why layered branches or blades of grass often appear in his paintings. These are conceived monumentally and, at the same time, are minimalistic with a refined palette of muted colors, set in the abstract environment of the picture surface in such a way that they create a strong dynamic and even psychedelic impression.
