BIOGRAPHY

Lizii Chan is a London-based artist whose paintings explore inner states that exist beyond language.

Her practice began at a time when words lost their meaning and painting became the most honest way to exist and respond to reality. Since then, her work has developed into a direct and intuitive visual language, where emotion, memory, and perception take form without explanation.

Chan works at the boundary between the conscious and the unconscious. She is drawn to themes that are difficult to speak about openly — fragile emotions, hidden fears, quiet desires, and moments of inner transformation. Rather than illustrating ideas, her paintings create space for experience. Each viewer encounters the work differently, bringing their own feelings and meanings into it.

Her visual language is clear and reduced: flat colour, strong shapes, and simplified figures. She rejects fixed rules and traditional canons, choosing honesty, purity, and simplicity as guiding principles. What appears minimal on the surface carries emotional depth and tension beneath.

For Chan, a painting is not an object but an encounter. Her works invite the viewer to slow down, look inward, and feel a subtle shift in awareness. Meaning is not imposed — it emerges through attention, presence, and personal perception.

STATEMENT

I was born In Barcelona, grew up in Kyiv, and my path as an artist began at the moment when everything else collapsed.
When the war started, painting became the only space that still exist, a fragile thread connecting me to life. I painted because there was nothing else left. Out of that silence, a new visual language emerged, theatrical, mystical, emotional,
and deeply personal.

My art is not about depicting. They are about invoking. Each canvas is a dialogue between what can be seen and wha remains hidden..Between the parts of ourselves we are ready to face and those we try not to show. Through geometry, colour, and rhythm, I explore the tension between control and surrender, order and chaos.

In ancient Rome, there was the god Janus – a deity with two faces.
He reminds us that everything in the world has two sides: good side and a bad side, light and darkness, the visible side and the hidden one.

With the paintings, just like with people – there is what you can see with your eyes, and there is what is hidden from them. That side you can only “see” with your soul – that never lies.

I am drawn to symbols and transformation. Mysticism, tarot, and subconscious imagery are not subjects for me, but ways of navigating uncertainty, – a safe spot in the unstable world.

My practice continues to evolve in London, yet its roots remain in that moment of loss, when I didn’t who I am anymore. Art for me is more that just the draws of acrylic on canvas – it is a life, a death; happiness and sorrow; light and darkness; triumphs and defeats.

There are many languages in the world, but there is a language that does not need words – the language or art.
My paintings ask for no explanation and give not answer.
They are about the moment when the silence becomes louder than words.
