BIOGRAPHY
Laura Pokki is a Finnish ceramicist. A microbiologist by trade—a graduate of University of Helsinki—she rekindled her childhood love for clay in 2007. She has been a passionate wheel-thrower from the start and is particularly interested in learning new techniques and seeing how far clay can be “pushed”. She is fascinated by glazes and the possibilities they offer. Laura tends not to plan her work too meticulously, but instead allows the work visualize itself in clay. The union of a functional object and art intrigues her.
Creating ceramics allows her to combine her scientific understanding of chemistry—such as the science behind glazes—with artistic self-expression. She hopes her work conveys both fragility as well as certain grittiness. Laura is committed to continuous learning and holds a professional qualification in ceramic craftsmanship.

STATEMENT
I hope that my work conveys the passion and the joy I have experienced creating these pieces. Ceramics is a form of self-expression for me that stems from a deep, innate need to create. Artistic freedom and the opportunity for self-realization are essential to me. I tend to shy away from excessive polish; instead I want my work to convey genuine emotion. Textures, colors and forms come together as a unified whole, and I don’t prioritize one over the other. The tactile quality—the feel of both the clay and the glaze—is crucial to the process; each piece calls for its own unique approach to best express its character.
My studio has an unique atmosphere; when throwing on the wheel, I often listen to songs, sometimes on repeat because their rhythm fits the process. Music and a positive state of mind are vital elements in my creative flow. I believe that art offers a momentary respite from our sometimes scary world. I hope you find these pieces inspiring and enjoyable.
