BIOGRAPHY

Katarína Alexy Fígerová is a distinguished Slovak painter, sculptor, and graphic artist whose vibrant and expressive work has been widely exhibited both in Slovakia and internationally. Known for her dynamic compositions, rich color palettes, and emotional depth, her art reflects a powerful dialogue between intuition, memory, and the symbolic language of color. Her works are held in private and institutional collections worldwide, including in Europe, North America, and Japan.

Born on January 8, 1963, in Bratislava, where she lives and works today, Alexy Fígerová studied at the Secondary Industrial School of Graphic Arts from 1978 to 1982. She began her professional career in graphic design, working in advertising, poster design, textile, and clothing design. Over time, she transitioned fully into fine art, initially experimenting with airbrush techniques and later focusing intensively on painting in acrylic and oil from 1992 onward.

Since 2002, she has expanded her artistic practice into sculpture, creating wooden works enriched with polychromy. Her sculptural language continued to evolve through the incorporation of metal elements and found industrial materials, and in 2019 she began producing works in bronze. That same year, she was selected as an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, marking an important milestone in her international career.

Alexy Fígerová has exhibited her work continuously since her debut solo exhibition in Prague in 1999, presenting numerous solo and group exhibitions across Slovakia, the Czech Republic, France, and other countries. Her paintings are characterized by expressive gesture, layered structures, and bold chromatic intensity. Symbolic forms, especially the circle, representing unity, continuity, and the cycle of life, appear frequently in her work, reflecting her philosophical engagement with time, nature, and human experience.

Her artistic expression bridges painting, sculpture, assemblage, and collage, often incorporating found objects and unconventional materials. These elements add tactile and narrative dimensions to her compositions, emphasizing the relationship between material reality and emotional perception. Her work combines intellectual rigor with emotional immediacy, reflecting both personal introspection and universal themes.

In recognition of her cultural contribution, she received the Commemorative Award of the Bratislava Self-Governing Region in 2023, honoring her artistic achievements and her significance within contemporary Slovak art. Today, Katarína Alexy Fígerová remains an active and evolving artist, whose work continues to enrich the contemporary European art scene.

STATEMENT

My work bridges raw materiality and spiritual abstraction, transforming industrial remnants into poetic narratives. Through painting and sculpture, I explore gesture, texture, and three-dimensional form, capturing energy, light, and dynamic moments. Sculptures in bronze, iron, and scrap balance weight and fluidity, merging industrial heritage with organic evolution.
