BIOGRAPHY
Julia Kohane is a New York City–based collage artist whose practice combines analog and digital processes. Using found imagery alongside her own photographs, she creates hand-cut physical collages that undergo minimal digital refinement before being presented as limited-edition archival prints on aluminum. Her compositions explore memory, transformation, and the collapse of linear time through surreal environments that function as both psychological and physical spaces.
Rooted in experiences of displacement and resettlement, her work considers how memory and emotion shape our sense of place and belonging. Figures often appear suspended within altered landscapes and shifting architecture, conveying vulnerability alongside resilience, while the works remain open to multiple interpretations.
Selected exhibitions include Hunterdon Art Museum, Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, Lichtundfire, Viridian Artists, Carriage Barn Arts Center, and Affordable Art Fair New York. Forthcoming exhibitions include the National Collage Society’s 42nd Annual Juried Exhibition at Kingsborough Art Museum, MoCA L.I.ghts 2026 – Night Visions, presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Long Island in Patchogue, Beyond Magic at Lichtundfire (by curatorial invitation), L’Âge d’Or in Paris, Galería Azur Paris, and Aqua Art Fair Miami Beach. Her collage Exile received Third Prize at Hunterdon Art Museum’s 2026 Members Exhibition.
Published press coverage includes an artist feature in Brutjournal, an essay on the group exhibition Before Time at Lichtundfire in TUSSLE, and an invited art review by the Circle Foundation for the Arts. Her work will appear in a forthcoming issue of Broad Journal. She is a juried Signature Member of the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA) and a juried Member Artist of the Circle Foundation for the Arts. Kohane holds a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Psychology and Philosophy from Fordham University.

STATEMENT
My work examines the tension between internal states and external forces within imagined worlds that function as both psychological and physical spaces. Time and place shift, familiar forms become unfamiliar, and figures exist in states of transition, while alienation and collective unease emerge. I resist fixed narratives, allowing meaning to remain fluid and open to multiple interpretations.
