ARTSPER

BIOGRAPHY

Gigi Perez is a multimedia artist based in Nyack, New York. Originally from Venezuela, her work showcases a blend of urban influences, street art roots, and a continual exploration of various styles and techniques.

The incorporation of recycled materials, such as posters recovered from the streets of New York City’s Bowery district and spray paint in her mixed media pieces, reflects her commitment to preserving the raw and accessible essence of street art. Through gestural painting and printmaking techniques, her preferred mediums of acrylics, collages, and mixed media on canvas allow her to creatively express herself.

A distinctive feature of Gigi’s work is her penchant for recreating the chaotic yet ordered aesthetic of old walls onto canvas. This is achieved through layering vibrant colors and carefully curating street-derived materials. Her methodology serves as an artistic choice and a statement on sustainability and art’s ability to repurpose everyday items into extraordinary works. As an active member of the LGBTQ+ community, her work aims to resonate with themes of identity and representation.

Gigi’s willingness to embrace new styles and techniques speaks to her belief in art as a perpetual journey of discovery. Her awareness of the importance of context and storytelling in art is reflected in her desire to avoid excessive explanation, valuing instead the observer’s visceral reaction and opinion, whether positive or negative.

Gigi began her journey as an artist under the tutelage of her mother, herself an abstract artist. After moving to the United States from Venezuela in the 1990s, she obtained her BA in Advertising and took art courses at an MFA program in Boston. Beyond being an artist, she has spent the past decade as a visual merchandiser, stylist, mother, and wife.

Each piece stands out with its innovative approach and captivating aesthetic. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for experimentation, Gigi’s art is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who sees it.

STATEMENT

My work examines personal and universal emotions to convey a message. Certain symbols, numbers and phrases hold profound meaning to me and are featured prominently in my pieces.

Layers of mark-making and recycled materials from protests, the walls of NYC are incorporated. Abstracted marks reveal emotional intensities and are intended to draw the viewer inward for an encounter. Working across multiple pieces allows for documenting experiences and hidden meanings to emerge over time.
