BIOGRAPHY
Born in Milan, Filippo Brera is an Italian abstract expressionist artist based in London. A lawyer by day and an artist by night, he is a self-taught painter mainly working with acrylic on large-scale canvas sizes. As an art enthusiast, Brera always had the innate desire to visually express his emotional world. With no art training or education, he began exploring his passion for painting over two years ago when the pandemic lockdown started. During this period of isolation, he began to explore his artistic side. Inspired by the abstract expressionist movement, he is influenced by artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Emilio Vedova and Gerard Richter.
Brera’s work is characterized by his abstract techniques. Moved by the feelings of the people he meets in his life and by its memories, he was always intrigued by the subjectivity of an emotional perspective. In his paintings, he captures this intensity through energetic paint strokes and textured shapes. In his practice he continues to push his boundaries, experimenting as much as he can on the canvas.

STATEMENT
I love to experiment and explore my emotional world through art. Inspired by interactions with people, abstract painting gives me the freedom to convey the essence of these feelings. I am fascinated by interpersonal relationships and the dynamic between the self and the other. Whether I had a conversation with someone I love or a brief non-verbal exchange with a stranger, I collect these memories for my pieces.
Painting is like water in my mind. There is a depth and movement that I can replicate. The ebb and flow of its fluid nature capture the shifting qualities of these feelings. I guide my brush with this in mind, energetically building textures of colour across the canvas. Working in layers, I paint in a manner that reflects the way these emotions move through my body. I build lighter shades and colours in combination with black to create visual depth.
When I am in the process of creating a piece, I can fully immerse myself in a moment of contemplation without the boundaries of logic. I aim to create a visual space open to interpretation. I believe everyone has their own unique response to the things they feel and see.
