BIOGRAPHY
Anja Siimes is an abstract expressionist painter based in Helsinki, Finland.
Her art explores her early experiences as a child before verbal development and being here and now as an artist, which draws on her experiences in perinatal research, psychoanalysis and training in psychosomatics and phenomenology.
Her fascination lies with the embodied, imagined, and perceptual worlds that precede cognition, words and symbols, as experienced by both babies and painters.
Her abstract style of painting best captures the minds early visual emergence as well the genesis of artistic expression, independent of consciousness: the experience of being.

STATEMENT
The early human mind begins in images. Why would I not paint this; I am a painter.
I paint early being: existence before words, when experience is lived through images, sensations, rhythms and relationships. I am interested in the emergence of the self, becoming oneself and becoming an artist.
For me, being is fundamental and does not require words. My thinking moves between phenomenology and neurobiology, between lived experience and the processes through which experience takes form.
Abstraction is not simply a visual style, it is the natural language of what I paint: early being as image, before it becomes language.
