\u201cLion-Monkey\u201d \u2014 "a Lion on Acid\u201d
\n \u2014 note d\u2019intention.<\/p>\n
I started \u201cLion-Monkey\u201d on a support that was originally anything but an artistic surface: the back of a cardboard chocolate bar wrapper.
\nI like the idea of \u201cart-ing\u201d on my chocolate packaging \u2014 something consumed, destined to disappear, suddenly transformed into a space for creation.<\/p>\n
The lion appeared this way. In fact, it was in the toilet that I noticed these two wooden wall panels, where the grain of the wood \u2014 and especially two darker knots, perfectly positioned and resembling eyes \u2014 formed, almost drew, this strange and deconstructed lion.<\/p>\n
Actually, it exists.
\nIt\u2019s in my piss-room.<\/p>\n

\nMarcel Duchamp spoke of the ready-made. Here, one might speak of a found image
\n\u2014 a found drawing \u2014<\/p>\n
It was from this apparition that I began to recreate it on my chocolate packaging. Then I added lines, colours, fragments, collage elements, until a hybrid creature emerged: the Lion-Monkey.<\/p>\n
What is a \u201clion on acid\u201d?
\nIt is a wild animal that has passed through a kind of chromatic and mental explosion.<\/p>\n
\u201cLion-Monkey\u201d presents itself as an animal apparition that is at once familiar and deeply disturbed. At the centre of the composition, the face of a large feline emerges from an accumulation of painted lines, fragments and saturated colours. But it is no longer quite a lion: it has mutated into something simian.<\/p>\n
The title itself maintains this ambiguity, bringing together two animal figures and two imaginary figures:<\/p>\n
the solar power of the lion
\nand the more playful, wild and unpredictable instinct of the monkey.<\/p>\n
The work embraces a raw, almost brutal aesthetic, in which the gesture takes precedence. One might describe it as Pop Art passed through a filter of raw matter.
\nDivergence, visual chaos, contamination by matter. Several temporalities collide around the lion\u2019s face.<\/p>\n
\u201cLion-Monkey\u201d does not stop at pictorial collage. I introduced vegetal elements as well as granular materials evoking sand and earth.
\nWe are in the realm of assemblage. We are in the primitive.<\/p>\n
My lion is going to come out of the shithouse \u2014
\noh no!!

\nReclaimed support \/ repurposing of materials \/ reuse \/ poor materials.<\/p>\n
The frame has been \u201carted-up\u201d by me as well, and the work is signed on it, at mid-height on the right-hand side.<\/p>\n
\u201cPost-Pop\u201d<\/p>\n
At the boundary between Pop Art, raw art and assemblage.
\nThe work engages in a dialogue with Pop Art. It draws on certain Pop Art codes \u2014 frontality, saturated colours, immediate visual impact \u2014
\nwhile confronting them with a raw, gestural and material practice.<\/p>\n
One might even call it:<\/p>\n
\u2026 \u201cpost-Pop\u201d!!<\/p>\n
Flashiness, transformation, the wild and \u2026 but once again, I\u2019m telling you: this lion-monkey exists. I saw it in the bathroom.
\nThe result oscillates between the wild and the artificial, between earth and electric colours, between collage and drawing, between Pop Art and a more raw, more instinctive practice.<\/p>\n
It is a lion on acid: an animal figure passed through a bath of colour, matter, and fragments of the real and the unreal.<\/p>\n
