This artwork is inspired by Picasso's engraving\u2026
\nThe work belongs to a visual lineage extending from Degas's brothel monotypes through Picasso's late engagement with them. *\u00a0:
\nPablo Picasso liked the pastels of Edgar Degas.
\nThe work draws upon the visual memory of Edgar Degas's brothel monotypes and, more particularly, upon the fascination they exerted on Pablo Picasso. Between 1958 and 1960, Picasso acquired nine of Degas's brothel monotypes. More than a century after Degas's first explorations of this world, Picasso returned to it repeatedly, transforming the brothel into a strange theatre of bodies, desire, observation and artistic memory.
\nGirls waiting for the client, talking, washing themselves up… Complicit and immodest reproductions illustrating the world of brothels.
\n"La F\u00eate de la Patronne" 1878 Edgar Degas ("a virtual hang-out, through Degas reproductions), with him in the brothels.
\nThis made Pablo Picasso want to replicate this atmosphere with a series of engravings on the theme of brothels.
\nAnd, this made me want to make my own .. "Brothel"<\/p>\n
\u201cshameless, the vaporous women\u201d : <\/p>\n
Women with light virtues, dazed absinthe drinkers, "braillerie" and broken backs.
\nThe women appear almost to dissolve into the ink. Bodies emerge from fragments of line; faces disappear into shadow; legs, hands and torsos are caught between description and erasure.
\nThe drawing allows the brothel to be shown in broad daylight, and the concern here is the "evocation" of the atmosphere in it.<\/p>\n
