Burned Out explores exhaustion, burnout, loneliness and the consumption of one\u2019s own physical and emotional energy. The match becomes a metaphor for a person who has burned for their passions and responsibilities until they have reached the point of exhaustion consuming themselves in order to keep going.
\nThe sculpture was created through a physically demanding process that became part of its meaning. I made the piece by pulling together my mental and physical forces, gathering whatever strength I had in order to create it. It was hand built using slab and pinch pot techniques, then hand painted and sponged to create its textured surface.
\nThe process of making the work reflects the condition it represents: the effort of continuing to create even when energy feels depleted. The match is therefore not only an image of burnout; its own making carries the physical experience of pushing through it.
\nAt the end of the process the sculpture was broken and then repaired using a Kintsugi inspired technique, combining super glue and epoxy with 22.5 karat gold leaf. The cracks and imperfections were not concealed. Instead they were highlighted and transformed. Against the black and white surface of the match the gold appears almost to glow through the breaks, giving the damage a new sense of value.
\nThe cracks therefore become more than evidence of something that was broken. They represent the imperfections of both the sculpture and life itself, experiences that can alter us without diminishing our worth. What initially appears to be a break becomes almost a glow up, the place where something was damaged becomes the place where something precious emerges.
\nAlthough the title Burned Out suggests something that has reached its end, this sculpture is far from being dead. The gold catches the light, allowing the broken match to continue glowing after its fire had disappeared. It becomes a small shimmer of hope and a reminder that even after exhaustion, something can remain, transform and shine.
\nThe fire may be gone, but the light is not.
