\u200bL. van Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73 ‘Emperor’<\/p>\n
This work is a visual interpretation of the second movement of Beethoven\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 5, ‘Emperor’.
\n\u200bBeethoven would have carved out beautiful melodies one note at a time, pressing his ear against the piano. What color was the music he encountered in the silence where sound could not reach? What was it that he wanted to hold onto?
\n\u200bJust as Beethoven sought melodies in the silence, I added traces on the canvas by playing it like a piano, using my fingertips, knuckles, and sometimes the sensation of my fingernails to leave marks, ranging from light to heavy. Those faint lines are what contain the traces of the poignant melodies he left behind.
\n\u200bThe sculptural Lego blocks at the bottom of the work represent the movement of the melody, rising gently and then settling down, while the fallen fragments are the traces of where the melody had lingered.
