It is an act of resistance—a refusal to pass down the
silences, punishments, and erasures that never served us.
In creating this piece, I reflected on the difficult but necessary process of
unlearning. I chose tenderness where I had once received discipline,
conversation where I had once been silenced. I embraced parenting as a co-
creation, where autonomy and emotional truth are honored. As my children
have grown into their own agency—now 16 and nearly 18—I’
ve had to defend
their right to set boundaries, even with family. That act of protection is also
an act of love.
This painting also speaks to the shape-shifting nature of family itself.
Motherhood dismantled the identities I had once clung to and required that I
rebuild, not in the image of tradition, but in the truth of who I am. My divorce
reminded me that no one was coming to rescue me. My father
’
s passing
affirmed that I was already who I had been waiting for. And it was through the
very art passed down from my ancestors that I reclaimed my voice.
Faux flowers bloom across the canvas, symbolizing resilience born of
something not quite "natural"
—a motherhood not rooted in tradition, but in
choice. This is a love letter to the mothers who build new worlds and to the
children they raise to thrive in them.

Reflective Prompt:
What generational patterns have you chosen to break, and how has that act reshaped
your understanding of love, family, or freedom?

J.
