I painted it during the first summer that felt safe outside again after the isolation of the pandemic. It was also the first piece I created after she was gone\u2014and after God gifted me a free home. That combination of grief and grace, of absence and abundance, shaped every stroke.<br \/>\nThis painting is inspired by the vibrant, joyful, and affirming Black media of my 1990s childhood. That era\u2014led by visionaries like Spike Lee, the Wayans family, Robert Townsend, and even the more complex legacy of Bill Cosby\u2014offered a spectrum of Black life that felt whole. We were allowed to be romantic, complicated, brilliant, beautiful, and hilarious. Black girls like me\u2014who split their time between PWIs and the hood\u2014saw ourselves in characters who loved boldly and dreamed without apology.<br \/>\n\u201cIn Loving Color\u201d celebrates that light. Through luminous colors and layered textures, I pay homage to a love that is expansive, spiritual, and distinctly Black. It&#039;s a love that bell hooks reminds us is a craft\u2014a daily practice of care, connection, and resilience. I see this love in the quiet dignity of everyday life, in gestures of tenderness, and in our refusal to seek vengeance for the past. Black love, in its fullness, is not performative. It\u2019s not transactional. It\u2019s a legacy of radical embracing.<br \/>\nThis painting is both memorial and offering\u2014a visual reminder that Black love has always been a force of transformation. And in a world that so often misunderstands us, In Loving Color asserts: we have always known how to love deeply, joyfully, and in full color.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/galeriaazur.art\/esp\/artist\/c-joi-sanchez\/\">J.
