A Clearing in Forgetting <\/p>\n
This series emerges from research into the material culture of Cantonese opera costumes, tracing journeys across Guangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Southeast Asia, and Vancouver. What began as archival inquiry became a waking vision. Landscapes layered with silent narratives are woven into every embroidered motif. Mountains, clouds, and flowing water once signified power, grace, and celestial identity.<\/p>\n
Through a contemporary diasporic lens, the work reimagines Chinese landscape painting, fusing Eastern ink wash aesthetics with Western techniques. Opera costume chromatic drama and intricate symbolism are translated into abstract, minimalist compositions, where spectacle meets contemplative emptiness. Simulating concept of embroidery becomes flowing brushstrokes. Adornment becomes celestial atmosphere.<\/p>\n
These are liminal states, hovering between earth and sky, between day and night, between waking and dreaming. They are clearings within forgetting, moments when memory arrives not as sharp fact but as soft vision. The paintings do not recover the past.
