Wherever You Stand, Be the Soul of That Place is part of my Rumiyat collection, inspired by the poetry and philosophy of the 13th-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Al Rumi. I am deeply drawn to Rumi's belief that the divine resides within us and that our relationship with God is a personal journey of the heart.<\/p>\n
This painting is inspired by his quote, "Wherever you stand, be the soul of that place." The figures can be interpreted in many ways: as a single person moving through different stages of life, as one individual within different situations, or as separate individuals whose presence transforms the spaces they are in. I intentionally leave that interpretation to the viewer, inviting each person to decide who the figures are, what they may be doing, what gender they may be, and what story they carry and how they see themselves in them. <\/p>\n
The background incorporates the pattern of an authentic Damascene blanket in a subtle and translucent manner, creating a sense of spirituality, memory, and nostalgia. Using multiple layers of oil paint, I built a surface that feels both luminous and grounded. The vivid ochres and yellows, violets, and pinks were chosen to balance energy with stillness, while the orchids symbolize beauty, devotion, inner strength, and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n
Along one side of the painting, I used traditional upholstery pins to mend a tear that occurred in the canvas during the creative process. Rather than replacing the canvas or concealing the damage, I chose to preserve the scar as part of the artwork's history. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, which honors brokenness and repair as part of an object's journey, I adapted the concept using materials that are deeply familiar to me. The upholstery pins reference the furniture and interiors I grew up around, allowing me to merge the universal idea of healing with personal memory and visual language, while also reflecting the act of creation itself and the ability to transform damage into something new, meaningful, and whole.<\/p>\n
