This painting is my interpretation of one of his love poems. Like much of Qabbani's poetry, it draws on the symbols of Damascus that frequently appear in his writing, including jasmine flowers, Damascene homes, orange trees, and the famous fragrant Damascene roses. The jasmine, in particular, is a powerful symbol of Damascus and its identity. The two figures represent pure and genuine love, while the white jasmine surrounding them serves as a metaphor for innocence, purity, and the timeless beauty of a sincere love story.

The background incorporates the print of an authentic Damascene blanket, a traditional textile found in nearly every Damascene home and one that holds deep meaning for generations of families. By integrating it into the artwork, I preserved a piece of my cultural heritage that was beginning to deteriorate with time. Using multiple layers of oil paint, I created a rich and textured surface that allows memory and symbolism to emerge gradually throughout the composition. Some of the jasmine flowers are painted by hand, while others are created using stencils. I intentionally used stenciled jasmine to create a lighter, almost translucent presence, reinforcing the sense of purity and softness associated with both the flower and the love story itself. The composition is intentionally denser and more intricate at its base, gradually opening upward to reveal more of the Damascene blanket pattern, creating a visual movement between the intimate narrative of the figures and the cultural memory embedded in the background. Through a combination of figurative and abstract elements, I explore themes of love, memory, and the preservation of identity.

[486,180
