This piece emerged during an experimental period in Elise\u2019s practice, when she began exploring alternative substrates for acrylic and oil painting. It was initially painted on a large sheet of watercolor paper, which was then coated with multiple layers of translucent gesso to transform the soft, absorbent surface into a harder ground more suitable for paint application. As the surface evolved, so did the composition. The borders at the left and right edges preserve evidence of the painting\u2019s earlier development, including sharp diagonals and layered washes created before the gesso preparation. Rather than erase this history, Elise retained these traces of process to frame the central image and deepen the visual narrative.
