Historically framed within patriarchal myth as a figure of terror and punishment, she has functioned as a warning against female autonomy and embodied power. Here, she is reclaimed as subject rather than spectacle. Her hair, material and metaphor, evokes hybridity, transformation, and defense. Rather than representing monstrosity, the serpents become extensions of consciousness, proliferating thought, multiplicity, and resistance. The textured surface resists smooth idealization, disrupting the classical tradition that sought to aestheticize and contain the female body. The direct gaze is central to the work’s conceptual framework. In myth, Medusa’s gaze petrifies; in art history, her image has often been rendered inert, decapitated, subdued, aestheticized for consumption. This painting included in the Presence Series, I aim to reversethat dynamic. The viewer becomes implicated in a reciprocal exchange of looking. With this figure she does not seduce or threaten; she confronts. Through the earthen, iron-rich palette I situate Medusa within a material register of fire and soil, elements associated with both destruction and regeneration. Through fragmentation of light and shadow, the face resists singularity, suggesting identity as layered, contested, and continuously reforming. By reclaiming Medusa as a sovereign presence rather than a cautionary tale, the work transforms petrification into resistance.

[468,180
