The mountain depicted here is Mt. Yotei, affectionately known as Ezo Fuji because of its striking resemblance to Japan\u2019s iconic Mt. Fuji. It stands tall near my hometown in Hokkaido, and I was fortunate to see it every day as a child. Towering over the landscape, it seemed to fill a third of the sky\u2014and I loved it.<\/p>\n
In summer, its slopes turned lush and green. In fall and winter, snow blanketed the peak, and the trees below faded to grey, giving it a more solemn presence. Mt. Yotei wasn\u2019t just a backdrop to my childhood\u2014it was part of it. I climbed to its summit several times, camped at its base, and once biked the entire perimeter with my sixth-grade class.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been many years since I last saw the mountain, and I miss it deeply. I painted this scene to feel close to it once again. If you\u2019re lucky, you might find the perfect spot to witness Mt.
