Through this artwork, I explore the theme of reading among women. Reading has been one of the main triggers for feminist emancipation, as books contained knowledge that was often denied to women. With an education primarily reserved for men, women were forced to renounce their futures or passions to work within the home. For some, this system felt like a prison to their freedom, a gilded cage. As an avid reader myself, I wanted to create my own version of The Reader, a classic artistic theme.<\/p>\n
In the piece, the woman is lying in a bed immersed in nature. The choice of the bed is symbolic because it is at the heart of human existence: " a place where we seek rest night after night, but also where we love and die, where life is conceived and where it begins, where we seek refuge when illness strikes, and where we generally take our final breath. The bed, in human life, is a place whose existential significance is hard to match " .(Les Femmes qui lisent sont dangereuses by Laure Adler and Stephan Bollman).<\/p>\n
