My Heart Has Teeth was inspired by the song with the same title by the artist, Deadmau5. I first heard this song when I was at the gym and the chorus immediately resonated with me. By nature, it is easy for me to “bite down” and fully apply myself to anything I truly love or identify with. As someone who is a month away from celebrating sixteen years of sobriety, and is a husband and father, I have had to learn boundaries and balance to live a healthy and productive life. Art, however, allows me to break free from these constraints as I embrace my obsession to create art. Art is liberating as it allows me to freely and safely pour any emotion, ambition, or trauma into a medium that allows me to heal and grow not only as an artist but as a person.<\/p>\n
I enjoy the challenge of exploring and developing multiple styles and including them into the same composition. This piece reflects that goal. In the foreground is a realistic heart and teeth to visually reflect the title and the passion behind my heart and soul. In the background, however, is a contemporary approach that juxtaposes the realist foreground. The jagged design in the back is designed to represent teeth or passion, but is also depicted as threatening the heart. This is to represent how people can respond when they feel threatened or experience mistreatment and injustice.<\/p>\n
This is one of my most recent paintings which shows a tremendous amount of evolution in my art.
