Odysseus is one of the best-known Greek heroes of the Trojan War. His surviving deeds were written down by Homer in the ‘Iliad’, a few hundred years before the birth of Christ. While the Iliad is one of the most important works of world literature and still characterises European art and humanities today with great images such as the Trojan Horse and the Judgement of Paris, Bernd Caspar Dietrich asks: How much misfortune did the heroic stories cause behind the scenes? What state was Troy left in after the ten-year siege? How much wilful destruction, suffering and misery have the myths inherited or tattooed into our DNA? We think of Odysseus as the good guy, the cunning one, the creative one, a real leader who always knows what to do. But how high is the price of following him? For what, against whom, when it is already clear that anger, betrayal and envy are no good. So how do we translate Ulysses into the present? The large-format painting shows a rugged landscape, criss-crossed by deep furrows, which opens up like an archaic field of memory. Changing shades of blue, green and emerald mingle to create transfiguring afterimages of the observing eyes. Gently and harmoniously, broken layers blend into one another and assert a cosmic perspective on the good old blue planet. Where exactly is Troy?

[400,24
