The Wallace Stevens poem The Idea of Order at Key West illustrates how a seascape, with its numerous compositional elements, remains meaningless without the participation of something outside its own totality. In his poem it is a woman's voice that places the compoenents in order – it is the relationship between her voice and the sea that gives meaning to both.

\nShe measured to the hour its solitude.\t
\nShe was the single artificer of the world\t
\nIn which she sang. And when she sang, the sea,\t
\nWhatever self it had, became the self\t
\nThat was her song, for she was the maker. Then we,\t
\nAs we beheld her striding there alone,\t
\nKnew that there never was a world for her\t
\nExcept the one she sang and, singing, made.<\/p>\n
