We instinctively group things together so that we can better identify patterns used in decisions or solving problems. It is also the source of our bias, bigotry, racism, and every other instance of &quot;othering&quot; we experience.<\/p>\n<p>When we group things physically or mentally, we establish a boundary that divides. It helps us build communities and find mates, but it also allows us to justify abhorrent behavior and treatment of others. We justify solitary confinement, malicious policies, war, collateral damage, and acts of violence that would otherwise seem inconceivable.<\/p>\n<p>This painting is part of a lifelong series that looks at borders and division. These things are both constructed and occur naturally.
