BIOGRAPHY
Yu Qian, an Eastern abstract artist deeply rooted in native cultural heritage while possessing an international perspective, grounds her creative practice in the emotional tension of Abstract Expressionism and the “freehand” tradition of Eastern aesthetics. Using oil and acrylic on canvas as her primary mediums, she has constructed an artistic system characterized by the “intertextuality of visual language.” The fluidity and spontaneity of her brushstrokes exemplify her commitment to “automatic creation,” where lines on the canvas interpenetrate, dissolve, and regenerate—echoing the dialectical relationship of “Yin and Yang interdependence” in Eastern philosophy. While her works abstain from figurative representation, they convey the rhythm of life through the “generative quality” of color, allowing viewers to perceive the interweaving of emotions and the wandering of the spirit. Transcending geographical boundaries with her artistic language, Yu Qian continues to explore the spiritual resonance of abstract art within a globalized context, establishing herself as “a formidable female force in the field of Eastern abstract art.”

Yu Qian was born in Changchun, China in 1978 and is a female abstract artist who has been based in Shanghai since 2004. She graduated from Jilin College of the Arts with a major in Fine Arts, and subsequently advanced her training through the Oil Painting Advanced Program at China Academy of Art, the Expressionism and Abstract Art Advanced Program at Central Academy of Fine Arts, and the Watercolor & Pastel Advanced Program of Shanghai Artists Association. By integrating figurative and abstract visual languages across Eastern and Western artistic dimensions, she has refined a distinctive visual syntax.
