BIOGRAPHY
Thomas Hagen was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1992. He was raised in West Des Moines, Iowa. He started photography at the age of 2, beginning in county competitions in Iowa. As a child he always had a strong sense of touch and a connection to nature. Thomas was not allowed to take science courses in high school because of his aspergers and dyslexia diagnosis. Regardless, nature and science were inspiring and luring him to find out more to understand the world in which he lives. Through this inspiration he made a wide variety of experiments using materials from within a multitude of environments. He spent 8 years as an assistant photographer helping a wide variety of photographers throughout Minnesota. During Covid he moved back to The Amana Colonies in Iowa where he conducts experiments that turn into an art as a fine art photographer. He works to understand nature by living and conducting experimental projects in rural America.

STATEMENT
Through photography I create portraits of the elements, chemicals, and biological matter that are one of a kind in their deeply detailed resonance through an experimental process. I express layered multitudes and nuance in witnessing intricate processes and capturing them on white metal prints. Through my photography, I demonstrate that the world is alive—constant molecular flux is the foundation of existence; and my body of work is profoundly existential in its expression.
