BIOGRAPHY

SONOKO NAKAJIMA is a Japanese abstract artist whose practice explores the relationship between structure, silence, and space. Working primarily with oil and paper, she investigates how lines, forms, layers, and margins can carry psychological tension and create a sense of presence and absence. Rather than depicting the visible world, Nakajima turns inward, translating states of perception, memory, stillness, and thought into reduced visual structures. Through layering, cutting, placing, and erasing, she seeks a balance between what is deliberately constructed and what remains unresolved. Her works invite quiet contemplation, allowing space and silence to become active elements within the composition. At the center of her practice is an ongoing search for the moment when structure begins to acquire emotional weight.

STATEMENT

My practice explores the tension between structure and silence, form and margin. I do not seek to depict silence, but to construct a space in which it can be felt. Through reduction, layering, cutting, placing, and erasing, I examine how lines and forms can hold psychological weight. I am drawn to the moment when structure becomes presence, and emptiness begins to speak.
