ARTSPER

BIOGRAPHY

Sam Ebohon was born in Lagos where he started his career as an artist. His experiments have resulted in very peculiar works which features large criss cross strokes that tend to veil the subject matter. His vibrant brush strokes bear a particular textual flourish not common in the business.
His works have captured virtually most things that can be physically experienced and has recently began to document more imaginary and spiritual subjects which has made his works even more abstract.
He has travelled far and wide and by imbibing some of his experiences, his works has become more acceptable amongst different thoughts and cultures.
He is a recipient of numerous awards and reviews with very good acclaim in exhibitions and auctions.
He is also an accomplished art teacher and husband.

STATEMENT

ARTIST STATEMENT

1. I see my work as kinetic. The effect of my brush work is both to veil and reveal beauty and elegance simultaneously. My exploration with paint definitively point toward a contemporary African concept of the sublime. Strokes dissolved into naturalistic forms seeking to define human existence within various thematic and social contexts through creating a balance between technique and visual effects. By this, as if seen through a glass prism, the images expand into reflections of motion.

2. My influences range from the master of old like Cezanne, Matisse, Kandinsky. And lots of Nigerian and African artists and art.

3. When I create my pieces, I either have an idea that I act on spontaneously or a series of idea that ends up as a body of work. The relationship of one or more of my works together can therefore be nil or deep depending on the inspiration behind it.

4. My art is a cumulative representation of my thoughts and my general disposition at any given time. It is a signature of my spirit and the commentary describing the forces battling for relevance in my soul. I start spontaneously but at the same time it is a well-thought-out design that is a vaguely finished in my mind before my first strokes land on the canvas. The messages are encrypted to be deciphered within the complex motifs characteristic of my style.
