BIOGRAPHY

Penny Oliphant is a contemporary artist and photographer best known for her melancholic take on images of rural New England. Born 1955 in Binghamton NY.
She was raised in Maine by a family of artists, where she found support for her creativity. Her grandmother was an alumna of Pratt Institute and her mother was a chief draftsman.
In 1970 Penny was part of establishing an accredited high school for college-level studies in Portland, Maine. Classes were held with Artists, Authors and other
professionals. She moved to Boston in 1973 to study fine art. In the late 70’s she moved back to Maine with her husband, Richard Parkhurst. In 1982 they
built an art studio on their property in Kennebec Valley. The studio has afforded Oliphant the time and space to create a large body of work, and a place to prepare for numerous exhibitions. Feature Shoot Magazine wrote that Penny’s eye often seeks out serendipitous, surprising moments within the landscape
of everyday life.

STATEMENT

I have chosen to continually photograph the interior landscape of Maine
and document unnoticed and unappreciated marginal places before they
disappear. The transformative power of photography enables me to reveal
a deeper level of reality beneath the veneer of contemporary life.
