BIOGRAPHY
Jordan Binney, being known for her use of red, presents us with a narrative in every painting.
The narratives are a cohesive story yet they also stand alone. The red gives her viewers a variety in interpretation being that color is subjective. In contrast to her open-ended invitation to interpret, her control of the image of her body is what makes this collection so special. She is redefining her vulnerability in a brand new way. The purpose of these works therefore is not to answer questions but to ask them. By practicing a deeply self-driven reflection process, her work is a representation of her past trauma or rather a visual diary of overcoming it.

STATEMENT
I project a sense of betrayal and vulnerability through painting suspenseful juxtapositions
of flat, hard-edge applications of red and carefully rendered figures by deeply reflecting on my experiences. I am a large-scale oil painter who depicts images of the human form in a color-blocked environment. By altering the composition of the human body’s relationship to one another I am asking people to grasp the fact that we all have a body, we all get naked, and we all go through trauma, to be human is to be a body- to be nude. The subjects in my work are centered in a red room making them a spectacle for the viewer. I use my own nude body in my work to take back the ever-present male gaze by controlling how and when it can be seen. The sense of power, control, and above all choice are the driving forces behind my process.
My artistic practice is a healing journey for me to confront the things of my past and overcome them myself. To achieve the utmost dedication to my studio practice I had to accept myself completely, stop judging myself, stop caring what others thought, and fully dive in headfirst to this subject I felt called to explore. I’m asking the viewer to reflect on their experiences, promoting an inquiry on how our relationships with each other should change and the way we intake the human body.
