STATEMENT

My painting exploration begins after I choose a color palette, although it changes as the painting unfolds. I rarely approach my painting with a specific idea in mind. Instead, I discover what the painting needs to express through a dialogue informed by color, texture, shape and line. I rely on my intuition to guide me as these relationships are built. I am moved by the sensuality of the oil paint and the colors being used which blend to create new colors and shapes. I’m curious to see what will be revealed as I experiment with different techniques. The painting emerges as I go through this process of discovery.

I find using a palette knife or my own hand and rag provides the experience of intimacy I most enjoy when creating my abstracts, landscapes and figurative paintings.

I’m drawn to various artists in history. Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s paintings for their vibrant light and saturated colors, and his focus on people in intimate and candid compositions. I admire Nicolas Poussin’s sensitivity to the nuances of gesture, design and color. I’m moved by an art of spontaneity, light and color, making Impressionism artist a favorite to view, such as Claude Monet. I’m inspired by Abstract art as well. I resonate with its visual language, an art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of visual reality but instead uses shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. Joan Mitchell, Mary Abbott and Cy Twombly are amongst my most favorite.

No matter how many times I view my finished art I’m always amused by the new images that appear that I had not seen before in the shapes and colors. It is a gift that keeps on giving!

Part of the joy in creating art is hearing how it is received by those who view it. Knowing they are moved in some way by an emotion they are feeling. To look and wonder, to recall a memory, to see a smile . . . whatever that emotion may be, to move and to be moved . . . you know art is making a difference.
