BIOGRAPHY

Hunter Hogan’s art studio, based in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, reflects a dynamic evolution in artistic practice. For years, Hunter used small collages as concepts for paintings but recently has begun integrating collage elements directly into her paintings. Hunter’s process incorporates making prints of plants and layering them, exploring the interplay of positive and negative space. Gathering local flora has become a ritual, with each new armful of plants inspiring unforeseen directions in painting. Hunter is fascinated by the balance between abstraction and representation, seeking to distill an essence of landscape through this lens.
With over forty years spent in Western Colorado, Hunter’s perspective and creative voice have been profoundly shaped by the landscape. Ongoing study and collaboration with celebrated artists at Anderson Ranch have further enriched this journey. Residencies, including one at the Santa Fe Art Institute, and an internship with Sheila Hicks in Paris, have deepened Hunter’s practice. Her work has appeared in publications such as House Beautiful, Santa Barbara, and Colorado Homes and Lifestyles magazines.

STATEMENT

For Years, I have made small collages as ideas for big paintings. I started making small paintings to collage into the paintings and then moved onto monoprints to collage into the paintings and that changed everything.
I like the interplay of the edges of the paper that create subtle shifts and unexpected contrasts. I am excited by the exchange of positive and negative space, and how layering creates complexity and depth.

Collecting local plants in my high mountain area has become a ritual. I start printing and let the process guide the painting. I am interested in the blurring of abstraction and representation and this distills my view of the landscape. The balance of warm and cool is important to me ,as is structure and color harmony. My work is about transformation, connection and how things go together.

A formative experience was being an intern for Sheila Hicks, in Paris, and thru her work I began to understand the union of serious and playful.
I was a tapestry weaver and shifted to painting in 1989. My paintings have been in House Beautiful Magazine, Santa Barbara Magazine, and Colorado Homes and Lifestyles.
My tapestries were featured at the Old Aspen Art Museum and also The National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington,D.C.
