BIOGRAPHY
Emma J Brown, originally from West Yorkshire and now based in London, is an artist known for her innovative use of mixed media to explore found subject matters. Her practice has a strong focus on casting materials, which she has integrated into her work in various ways. Through a process of repetition and exploration, she forms intricate relationships with her subjects, allowing for both playful and serious engagements with the dialogue between object and individual. This method of dissection and re-creation of connections is central to her artistic vision.
A recent graduate from Central Saint Martins, UAL, with a BA in Fine Art, Brown continues to develop the concepts from her final year project, titled The Becoming. This project delves into the complex relationship between rock and self, examining the notion of rock-human hybridity. Through the use of drawing and casting, she investigates this intriguing interplay, continuing the exploration she began in her degree show. The project highlights her fascination with materiality and form, where objects become intertwined with personal identity.
Emma’s work is characterised by her ability to merge tactile processes with conceptual inquiry, allowing her to blur the boundaries between subject and medium, object and self.

STATEMENT
The Becoming
“Rock and me.
The investigation of scale and fragmentation of the human form, delving into the integration of natural elements into a pixelated world, drawing and dialogue. Through digital manipulation and 3D printing, I traverse between the tangible and virtual, prompting viewers to reconsider reality. Comparing Earth’s geology with human narratives, I challenge human-centric perspectives, acknowledging the agency of non-human entities. Mirroring between humans and nature, from topographic maps to river erosion, informs my practice, navigating complexities through concrete casting and drawing. Inspired by Ana Mendieta, I document the dialogue between artist and landscape, reflecting on identity and connection. However, the use of my body as an object of investigation raises questions of objectification, prompting reflection on the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature. This examination leads to the concept of hybridity, where human and natural elements merge, epitomised by the relationship between me and a found rock. “
