BIOGRAPHY
Over the last 10 years I have traveled extensively in China and Japan studying Eastern philosophy and painting. I use Old Master’s painting techniques to create oil paintings with an Eastern aesthetic. Misty passages are created by sfumato, a painting technique of the Renaissance used to soften transitions between colours and create out of focus spatial planes. My painting has become an exploration of negative space or more aptly potential space, the pause between what we perceive and what is actually there.
Exploring the sensation of being limitless, yet totally engaged, where the sky and the earth merge weaving in and out of the winter mist, the mountainous valley cliffs, river and oceans become inseparable. At dusk and dawn when immersed in the water the horizon disappears into a vertiginous swell of sea spray. Mist becomes mystic, mystic becomes mythic.
