BIOGRAPHY

Claudia Hidalgo is a visual artist, specialized in photography. She was born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Her passion for photography has always been present, which led her to take various photography classes in NYU and Barcelona, after finishing her degree in sports journalism in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Key Biscayne, the place where she spends her vacations, has become a great inspiration in her career. She uses her camera to document her day-to-day life and her ceaseless necessity to explore the world.

Her work goes beyond shooting the photo and printing it, as she handles the whole process from beginning to end, as a necessity to curate every step of the finished product.

Behind her lens there isn’t a closed concept, but rather a moving narrative where she tells a story by manipulating the formal aspects of the image. She truly focuses in the colors to highlight elements that would have been lost to the naked eye.

STATEMENT

With each new series of work, Claudia Hidalgo’s narrative continues to develop in a language unveiled by her exploration of color. She uses distinctive hues to elicit a response beyond that which feels familiar in her photographs, deep reds, rich greens, and sharp blues intervene landscapes in unexpected shapes and spaces, removing any notion of place as fantastic sceneries begin to appear.

Once Hidalgo takes a photograph, she studies its composition to find the spectrum of colors represented on each plane and manipulates those colors to highlight certain aspects that might otherwise be lost in an image, elements not visible to the naked eye.

Her examination of the potential of color to change the way we see and, most importantly feel, is why we connect with the work in a way that feels so intimate.

This is clear not only through the aesthetic quality of her photographs, but through a diligent dedication to method; an important component to her process is that beyond shooting and editing, she also prints her own work.
