BIOGRAPHY
Anna Mathai is a multidisciplinary artist based in California, United States. She creates dynamic mixed media and sculptural works that use gold and plaster along with other reflective materials and techniques to create art that holds some sort of strange magic. Mathai’s art interacts with its viewers and the surrounding light to mingle art and enjoyer, to transcend viewing into experiencing. Mathai was born in the UK to Indian parents, but spent most of her childhood in the rural Deep South of the United States, which has heavily influenced the concepts she explores in her art. She feels that the aesthetic (and a touch of irreverence) is paramount; however, on the “series level” her works often translate feelings of rebellion, “otherness”, and the constructed self, with a touch of mysticality. Her work generally reflects on boundaries, both real and imagined, and blurs them.

STATEMENT
Our experiences form our individuality and our truth. For each person, the collection is unique — made of the emotions and memories that are cherished, those that slip away, and even those that haunt us– each forming our own little thumbprint. The Thumbprints series take soft, hazy memories, feelings, and pleasures from the artists life and translate them into 3D geometric abstractions. They wrangle the intangible and write it in stone.
