ARTSPER

BIOGRAPHY

Wilame Lima is a Brazilian-born French artist whose work explores the dynamics of transit and accessibility for racialized communities. Throughout his career, he has transitioned from journalistic photography to a style marked by dreamlike surrealism. This shift highlights his critique of neutrality and his valorization of identity as he tackles racism, homophobia, and xenophobia through a poetic yet political lens. For the artist, the act of abstraction is inherently political, particularly considering the societal pressure on marginalized groups to narrate their struggles, continually perpetuating the fetishization of suffering. Wilame firmly believes that photography is a means of liberation and therapy, advocating for visibility, inclusion, and more space to discuss other individualities.

STATEMENT

Every form of expression carries an individual’s ideas and beliefs, even those that claim to be neutral. To be neutral is – sometimes – to deny the very thing that makes us human: our essence and our capacity for empathy.
