BIOGRAPHY

Born in Malta in 1950, Simone Krug embarked on an extraordinary journey that would take her across continents and through diverse artistic realms. Emigrating to the United States in 1955 with her family—her father, mother, and brother—Simone’s early life was marked by significant challenges. Her father’s death from cancer in 1962 left her and her mother to navigate life together as a single-parent household.
Despite her early love for art, Simone’s passion was not initially encouraged in her academic environment. She pursued a degree in Spanish Literature and Language at university, a choice that would later lead to a prestigious Fellowship for her Master’s studies in Mexico. This period was instrumental in shaping her global perspective and appreciation for cultural diversity.
Upon returning to the United States, Simone met and married her husband, with whom she raised two beautiful children. During this time, she channeled her creative energy into a successful career in decorative art. For 20 years, she ran a flourishing business specializing in murals, Venetian plaster, and other decorative techniques. Her work graced private homes and estates in Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Italy, collaborating with renowned designers.
In 2019, a transformative experience began when Simone started taking workshops and classes online and at community colleges. This period of exploration reignited her artistic passion and led her to Abstract Expressionism—a genre she had long admired. Influenced by the works of Willem de Kooning and other Post-WWII American artists, Simone embraced the challenge of creating large-scale, non-objective art.
Today, Simone Krug stands as a professional abstract expressionist artist, celebrated for her vibrant, dynamic canvases. Her journey reflects a profound evolution from her early beginnings to becoming a significant voice in the world of contemporary art.

STATEMENT

Born near the Mediterranean Sea, I was taken far from its shores in my early years, yet the essence of that place—its scents, sounds, and buoyancy—has remained a part of me, shaping my artistic vision and emotional landscape.
The pivotal moment in my artistic journey occurred when I encountered Willem de Kooning’s “The River Door.” The painting’s raw energy and profound connection to my own memories of the sea left an indelible mark on me. It was this visceral reaction that cemented my desire to create art that translates personal experiences and emotions into visual form.
My approach to art is rooted in abstract expressionism. I begin with spontaneous mark-making using graphite, charcoal, or crayon, allowing these initial gestures to inform my process. I then layer acrylic paint onto the canvas with a variety of tools—brushes, trowels, knives—letting the medium guide me through each application. This layering process is crucial; it captures the evolution of my emotions and decisions. By sanding parts of the canvas, I expose earlier layers, revealing the depth and history embedded within the work.
From a distance, my paintings draw the viewer in with bold contrasts, shapes, and colors. Upon closer inspection, the surface reveals intricate details and textures, offering insight into the layers of materials and the intent behind the composition. Spontaneous marks, fluid brushstrokes, and excavated elements are central to my practice, creating a dynamic interplay between spontaneity and structure.
My work is a reflection of the journey between the past and present, an exploration of emotional landscapes through the language of abstract expressionism.
