BIOGRAPHY

Masako Nunokawa is a Japanese contemporary visual artist and researcher holding a PhD, whose practice explores the quiet emergence of light, perception, and material presence. Raised by parents who studied at art universities, she developed an early sensitivity to visual expression. Guided by her concept of Luminogenesis, she creates layered works using light-based materials such as glass cullet and LED. Inspired by her travels through Japan’s historic cities, her work reflects a quiet dialogue between memory, space, and the rhythms of nature.

CV

PhD in Media and Cultural Studies. Background in design, architecture, and research. Based in Sapporo, Japan. Exhibited in New York, London, Hong Kong, and Miami. Her practice integrates experimentation and practice across fine art, material research, and spatial thinking.

STATEMENT

Luminogenesis is an attempt to express the generation of light within human consciousness. Rather than depicting light as inherent in objects, I seek to let it emerge through layered materials and perception, evoking moments where light, space, and consciousness quietly resonate.
