BIOGRAPHY

Martin Kerntke was born 1955 in Germany. Since generations many relatives have been involved in painting, graphic, illustrating, acting, dancing, before. Specially his beloved grandfather, who once was a well respected impressionistic painter in the small town named Leer impressed him in his childhood and youth. So besides his later bread and butter jobs as geologist it became a sort of heritage that he perfected autodidactically his art. He investigated the techniques of modern artist and finally created his own style. He was deeply stimulated by lot of his travels and long term stays in places like Indonesia, Malawi, Nepal, Northern Africa, Papua Newguinea, Philippines, Spain. Besides his professional duties as scientist and fieldmapping geologist he could absorb the beauty of our planet, mostly well documented with a camera. Also some offshore experiences during the past years broaden his insider views. Often his family followed him for short stays and so he might gave his daughter an inspiring basis for her own art affin career in Munich while her parents are still based in Hamburg. Kerntke values his home and atelier which is located within the city, though its a quite remote place in a protected landscape surrounded by forest, ponds and moor. For him a perfect atmosphere to become one with his art and nature. A nature which is worth to be preserved.

CV

My single artwork are somehow related in style. Even though they should stay on its own. If my painting would need to be explained mainly by words, something would go wrong. Looking at my painting is like communication without words between viewers and me. I require the this noneverbal dialog. Art has to be nice and provocant same time, some people call it inspirative.

My art development was a journey from detail planning with very simple shapes and the few primary colors I experimented in my youth to more complex, sometimes even chaotic structures today. While painting I still play with interaction of shape and colours through overpainting, and corrections. It became improvisations direct on the canvas. Even if have started with a draft on the canva, which might be close to a photo or nearby nature the final result, always done in atelier, become a more abstract style.

Most of my work contain hints to our enddangered nature. I got the opportunity for an intense involvement with natural beauty as well as with natural hazards, with nearby vegetation, with animals, rocks, explotation of rawmaterials. I became confronted with diversity and extinction. My travels inspires me deeply. I value the present status of nature as a human being who became not only concious about it, but also familar with it. Now I try to defend it against recent man made and fast ongoing degradiation and demolition through my artwork.

As a geologist I tried to understand the earth scientifically – as an artist I still try to tell about nature in my compositions emotionally. I use this medium with a specific fundus of shapes, structures an colors about nature, just because the whole nature is too complex to become fully understood by human beings within their short existence.

My oil paintings with its slow painting process contradict somehow the present day fast changing digital world. It gives room to relax timeless and to become inspired.
