BIOGRAPHY

“The Crucifixion of Martijn Duifhuizen had brought spirit in the exhibition The Dutch biblebelt. This masterly piece of art made that the visitor came face to face with the essence of the Christian faith. Together with the musical work of Kees Wisse, the work of art brought an oasis in the exhibition: a Moment of Contemplation.” – Marieke van Schijndel, CEO of Museum Catharijneconvent Utrecht –

“… an artist through and through with a beautiful deeper layer in his art.” – Marc de Beyer, CEO of Museum Gouda –

Martijn Duifhuizen (Gouda,1976) obtained his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in 2004. Since then he is active as a visual artist. His work is a fundamental attempt to experience the surface. In his art, all irrelevant context disappears. Within that absolute minimum lies the core, the essence.
His artworks evoke contemplation and compel the viewer to look inward. Time, stillness, and space are essential to be moved by his work. Then, another dimension reveals itself: not a physical one, but a spiritual one.
The iconography of ancient Christianity regularly plays a role in his work.

His work was to be seen in several museums: De Fundatie in Zwolle, Kunstmuseum of The Hague, Museum Gouda, City Museum in Zwolle, Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht and the Dordrechts Museum.

He exhibited his work solo or at group exhibitions in among others Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht and at art fairs as ArtTheHague, KunstRAI and in Rotterdam Contemporary.

In 2015 he had been selected for the third edition of the Symposion Gorinchem and realised a ‘stilte/ruimte’ (silence/space) at the Langendijk. It was opened By Her Royal Majesty Princess Beatrix on the 6th of June. He personally met her after the opening in ‘het Tolhuis’.

Brain injury
His work is influenced due to a traffic accident in 2015. From that moment on he is dealing with gloominess, overstimulation and memory problems.

STATEMENT

VISION

I am always looking for a minimum expression of what I would like to say. Sometimes it is an action, an other time it will be the surface and again another time, the shape. I am not limited by expressing myself in only one way. – Martijn Duifhuizen –

WHAT DOES THE WORLD OF ART SAY

His work of art breathes an enormous serenity to contemplate. This even occurs when he uses pure gold, as with his works ‘icoon’ and ‘the last supper’, which often are associated with abundance and extravagance.
The work of Martijn urges contemplation, devote meditation, religious reflection according to the ‘Dikke van Dale’. This is exactly what the work moves people. His paintings, often in monochrome white and black, force into that direction. Many people probably will not like this, but his work forces you to reflect upon yourself. To what is important and especially in your own life.
If you are touched by it, it will open another world, another dimension, not physically, but mentally. Now we reach the point of religion, but this does not always have to be the case. It can also be humanistic, philosophical, hence the element of contemplation.
This will be different for every individual person. It is how it will be interpreted individually. What is nice about art is that you can let go of it. The universal beauty experienced by man is being reflected.
