BIOGRAPHY
Anna Martin is part Spanish and British. She initiated her career at Chelsea School of Art and graduated with a BA in Graphic Design from Parsons School of Design New York. She went to work in Madrid in publishing and advertising for a few years before returning to London where she continued to work as freelance graphic designer for many of the mainstream editorial publishers. After a few years she ventured into the field of personal development and performance coaching acquiring a Master NLP certificate and International Coaching Certificate. An integral part of her career has been as a facilitator of small group workshops and coaching in the fields of communications, health and well-being and creativity. At this time her own passion for fine art was awoken and for the last 15 years she has been pursing her own art as well as being a tutor and artist in residence for small and medium creative holiday organisers. She currently purses her passion for painting in Cheltenham UK where she lives with her husband and combining this with running painting holidays in Turkey, Spain, Greece and the UK. She visits Spain a lot as she is involved in the running of a family hotel in Murcia.
Anna is mostly described as an expressionist painter. She derives her influence from the language and vibrancy of the impressionists and abstract expressionists. At times drawn to more abstract compositions with a mute colour palette and at others boldly expressing discordant colour harmonies. She is very influenced by music and as a pianist she says of her work. ‘ My art is a vehicle to transform the world into dazzling colour and rhythm and offers a lens through which the world is viewed as a myriad of colour and instant emotion .” She works unconsciously to allow gestural movements and rhythm to guide her painting. Music and movement fuse to direct the rhythm of her brushwork in a rapid momentum to create and evoke a sense of place in her art. Her colour harmonies like music resonate at a deeper level and carry a momentum regardless of the subject. Her semi abstract paintings provoke an emotional experience rather than carrying a narrative. For Anna art is transformational and with her background of applied psychology Anna uses art as a form of mindfulness which activates new neural pathways both in the painter and the viewer. She also likes to capture movement and convey this energy through subjects such as horses or dancers and conveys the energy of a fleeting moment as though seen through the eyes of the subject.
