STATEMENT

Artistic approach Anja Wülfing works with contrasts and opposites. She says it’s because two hearts beat in her chest. One beats for the Old Masters of Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassicism, the other for abstract painting. In her paintings contrasts get together: figurative elements meet abstraction, tradition meets progression. For this she combines two different surfaces and painting techniques with each other. She sews together fine and coarse canvas fabrics and then paints classic elements in oil and the abstract ones with acrylics, pencils and markers. Anja Wülfing also works with oppositional contrasts in composition and color – light/dark, dynamic/static, strict/playful, hard/soft, crowded/empty. She wants to find a balance in the presence of the opposites, without one of them dominating the composition. Both styles seem to be competing for attention and yet benefit from the other’s presence. Production After she has determined the composition, Wülfing first paints all colored areas in acrylic. After that, she adds the figures in oil – always, with the utmost respect and humility for the original masterpieces. She uses different techniques to create three-dimensional bodies – the work is planned and tedious. She studies the story the original painting is telling intensely; the depicted, the painter and their life. In the painting process she refers to the tried and tested, the familiar, the slowly grown, the matured, the old. When the work on the figure(s) is largely complete, she starts adding the free abstract elements with acrylic paint, pencils and markers. Wülfing combines the “old masters” with the expressive possibilities of modern painting, which can create “frequencies” such as attitude or moods through shapes and colors. Statement “I think we all draw incessantly from the experiences and achievements of other people, generations and cultures and combine them with our experiences to form our respective present. I do this with small fragments from the history of art, drawing on them and combining them with my experiences to create a new »presence«. As a result I want to reach a unique balance of styles proving that all the art rules are made to be broken and the familiar contexts exist to be redefined.”
