At the intersection of creativity and the subconscious mind, a groundbreaking collective proposition emerges, presenting itself as a symphony of automatism. This approach champions unbridled freedom in the association of images and colors, springing directly from a spontaneous reflex. A foundational principle of surrealism, automatism—referring to the suspension of rational control—manifests as chains of thoughts, coherent or not, allowing introspection to flow unrestrained. This process brings the unconscious to the surface, liberating the mind.

Through a variety of artistic languages, a group of visionary artists redefine the boundaries of art by unleashing the forces of automatism and delving into the deepest recesses of the subconscious mind. Artists Jaime Monge, Younghee Woo, Tommy Hagen, Knockknock, Adrián Benito Fernandez, Jacqueline Poitevin, Kathrin Sehl, Albina Bougartchev, Sonja Dold, Mark Perez Ortiz, Silvia Pepe, Elena Shuppo, Martina Heigl, Anne-Catherine Favier, Pei Ou, Beata Rozenblat (Ovca Studio), Maria Grazia D’Alessandro (Rednuv) and Thomas von Palubitzki craft a collection of intimate and ingenious works. The visual narrative of these pieces draws from numerous sources that inspired the enigmatic and often unsettling imagery of these artists, including classical mythology, Christian iconography, Freudian psychology, and popular culture imagery. These works—animated landscapes, anthropomorphized animals and plants, and human figures with animal traits—become increasingly intriguing and dreamlike.

From painting to sculpture, photography, and beyond, these creators have flirted with spontaneity, allowing the creative process to express itself freely. The essence of automatism is captured in the instant snapshot of fleeting images and the manifestation of unexpected forms. The works exhibited here are snapshots of the mind in motion, revealing internal landscapes and exploring the boundaries between the conscious and unconscious.

Furthermore, this new initiative by Galeria Azur Berlin not only celebrates individual automatism but also highlights the fluid collaboration among different artistic languages. Paintings converse with installations, photographs inspire poetry; “Automatisms and Subconscious” is a multidisciplinary conversation that challenges pre-established categories.

As you immerse yourself in this symphony of the unexpected, you are invited to question your own perceptions of art and explore the beauty inherent in spontaneity. How does your own subconscious mind relate to the works before your eyes?
